AROI 7’S TOURNAMENT 2017 – The Indian Ocean Rugby Association 7’s tournament played by U16 and U18 teams was held at the Alarobia Stadium in Madagascar. The Reunion Island teams shone in this competitive festival of Rugby winning U16 and U18 with a second place in the Girls tournament.
In 2016, at U18 Level, Madagascar had established themselves as the leading team after winning 19 to 12 against Reunion in the Final. Mauritius took third place ahead of two Madagascar teams with Mayotte being placed 7th.
This year, in spite of the rain the tournament was very successful with the following teams participating:
- Mauritius : U18 Boys and Girls (30 people)
- Reunion : U16, U18 Boys and Girls (52 people)
- Mayotte : U16, U18 Boys and Girls (52 people)
- Madagascar : 6 teams U16, 3 teams U18, 3 girl’s team
Reunion and Mayotte provided Match Officials and Level 2 Referees were appointed by Madagascar.
Each Madagascar team has a Level 2 7’s Head Coach and include two women in management/coaching.

The Cup was presented by the Head of Delegation and members of the Malagasy Rugby Union.
As the level of play improves every year the AROI’S technical and tournament organisers will decide on a new tournament format for 2018. Mauritius, Mayotte and Reunion’s progress continues and the level of competition will develop further with opportunities for these islands to play and meet more often during the year.
