2025 Rugby Africa Women’s Cup Tournament: Champions SA Put Down Title Marker as Kenya Make Strong Statement
Reigning champions South Africa defeated Uganda 62–7, while Kenya overpowered Madagascar 28–5 as both teams impressed on the opening day of the 2025 Rugby Africa Women’s Cup.
ANTANANARIVO, Madagascar– Reigning champions South Africa laid down a huge marker by defeating Uganda 62-7 as Kenya also made a statement in their 28-5 victory over hosts Madagascar on the first day of the 2025 Rugby Africa Women’s Cup on Saturday, June 7 in Antananarivo, Madagascar.
The Springbok Women thumped Uganda 62-7 in the first game, spearheaded by a brace of tries each from Lerato Makua, Faith Tshauke and Patience Mokone. Sumakele Namba, Byhandre Dolf, Aphiwe Ngwevu and Sinothile Bhengu also crossed the whitewash for the South Africans while Dolf, Mary Zulu, and Unam Tose converted.
Suzan Adong scored the consolation try for Uganda, converted by Priscovia Mukyala.
In the second match, Kenya flyhalf Grace Okulu was the star of the show with her try, penalty and drop goal in the East Africans’ win over Madagascar. Winger Stella Wafula, centre Moreen Muritu and fullback Sinadia Nyachio also added a try each.
The next batch of matches will be played on Wednesday, June 11. Organised by Rugby Africa (www.rugbyafrique.com), the continental governing body for rugby in Africa, in partnership with the Madagascar Rugby Union, the event returns to Stade Makis in Antananarivo, which previously hosted the 2023 and 2024 editions. This year’s tournament promises a high level of competition as teams continue their development toward future international events, including the 2025 Women’s Rugby World Cup in England.
