NAIROBI, Kenya Today, nearest rivals Kenya and Uganda emerge with a 100 percent win record while defending champions South Africa make a strong statement on day one of the 2025 Africa Women’s Sevens in Nairobi with two big wins.

The Springbok Women Sevens first demolished Mauritius 68-0 before overcoming neighbours Zimbabwe 45-0 in Pool A.

In their first match against Mauritius, the highlight for South Africa was braces of tries from Maria Tshiremba, Simamkele Namba, Patience Mokone and Vianza Boer with skipper Nadine Roos converting five of those in addition to a try of her own.

Against the Zimbabweans, Roos crossed the whitewash twice while Mokone scored a hat-trick.

Zimbabwe beat Mauritius 29-5 in the other Pool A tie.

Kenya, last year’s runners-up, also finished the day with two wins out of two, led by their inspirational captain Sheila Chajira.

The hosts eased past Côte d’Ivoire 44-0 and Ghana 37-0 in Pool B in their first step to lift the title on home soil.

Uganda, another top contender and the third-placed team from last year’s tournament in Ghana, also recorded two victories on the first day in Pool C.

Charles Onen’s charges overwhelmed Burkina Faso 50-0 in a scintillating try-fest at the RFUEA Ground but found Zambia to be tougher opponents before finally edging out the Southern Africans 20-14.

The other team to end the day with a 100 percent record was Madagascar in Pool D. The Lady Makis defeated debutants Egypt 31-7 and Tunisia 21-14.

The best-placed team in this tournament, outside Kenya, will secure a place in Division Three of next season’s SVNS Series.
